When I first arrived in Hvar, Croatia, I thought I’d only stay for two nights, just enough time to see the main sights and move on to my next stop along the Dalmatian Coast. But I fell in love with this sunny island so much that I extended my stay another night. Between its sparkling turquoise beaches, charming Old Town, and relaxed island vibe, Hvar quickly became my favorite place I visited during my 10 days in Croatia.

In this post, I’ll share my complete 3 day Hvar itinerary for solo travelers, including where to stay, what to do, and how to explore both Hvar Town and the nearby Pakleni Islands.

About Hvar

Hvar is one of Croatia’s most famous islands, known for its medieval Old Town, lavender fields, and clear blue Adriatic waters. Historically, it’s been an important port since ancient Greek times and later came under Roman, Venetian and Austrian rule. You’ll still see the influence of these empires in the architecture today, specifically at the Hvar Fortress, which was commissioned by the Venetian Republic.

Hvar is a large island, with several main towns scattered along the coast. Hvar Town, where this itinerary is based, is the most popular and where most ferries arrive. It’s filled with historic stone buildings, lively bars, and a beautiful marina, making it a perfect place to stay. Other towns like Stari Grad and Jelsa are quieter and more local, but Hvar Town is definitely the best base for solo travelers since everything you’ll want to do is nearby.

Is Hvar Good for Solo Travelers?

Yes, Hvar is an amazing destination for solo travelers! I found it easy to get around, safe, and full of friendly locals and travelers. Here’s a few reasons why it’s so great for first-time solo travelers.

  • It’s safe: I felt completely comfortable walking alone during the day and at night in the Old Town. I stayed about a 10 minute walk outside of town, and even felt safe walking back on the quiet streets after dark.
  • The Old Town is compact and walkable: Hvar Town is small enough to explore entirely on foot, with the best beaches, restaurants, and viewpoints all close together.
  • You can party or relax: Hvar is known for being a party island, with famous bars and beach clubs like Carpe Diem. But as an introverted solo traveler who likes to go to sleep early, I found that there was so much beyond the parties, and spent most of my time relaxing and exploring the beautiful island.
  • There’s plenty of solo-friendly activities: From hiking up to the fortress to island-hopping tours, there are endless ways to fill your days whether you want to explore on your own or join a group tour.

One downside of Hvar is that it is on the pricier side compared to Zadar or Split (I found prices to be about the same as Dubrovnik). So if you’re a solo traveler on a budget, you might want to limit your time in Hvar. However, I put together a guide on How to Visit Hvar on a Budget, so you can experience this incredible Croatian island without compromising your budget or fun.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Hvar?

If you are just sticking to Hvar Town, you can see the main highlights in one day. If you are short on time, you can even visit Hvar as a day trip from Split, either by booking your own ferries, or joining a group tour like this one.

However, I highly recommend spending at least two to three days in Hvar if you want to slow down and actually enjoy the beaches. I originally planned to stay for just two nights, but I ended up extending to three because I didn’t want to leave! The extra day gave me time to relax and take a day trip to the nearby Pakleni Islands.

How to get to Hvar?

Hvar is accessible by ferry from both Split and Dubrovnik, with several sailings per day in the summer. Getting there, I took the ferry from Split, which took about 1 hour and 15 minutes. And leaving, I took the ferry to Dubrovnik, which took about 3 hours. It’s the perfect way to break up the journey from Split to Dubrovnik, which can take about 4 hours by bus.

It’s best to book your ferry tickets ahead of time online, especially during high season (June–September), as they often sell out. Check prices and times here on Omio. Ferries arrive directly at Hvar Town’s harbor, just a short walk from most accommodations.

Where to Stay in Hvar?

I stayed at Rooms Hvar, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s located about a 10-minute walk outside the Old Town, close to Pokonji Dol Beach. It was far enough from the nightlife to be quiet at night, but close enough to walk everywhere. They offer private rooms with shared bathrooms, but there was hardly any one else staying there so I mostly had the bathroom to myself. The room was clean, cozy, and super affordable for Hvar, which is saying a lot since this island can get pricey.

The best part of Rooms Hvar was the host, Bruno, who was so kind. He even picked me up from the ferry terminal and upgraded me to a room with a balcony overlooking the town and sea. So if you’re a solo traveler who prefers a peaceful stay instead of a party hostel, Rooms Hvar is the perfect choice.

The 3-day Hvar Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Hvar

Take an early ferry from Split or Dubrovnik to Hvar Town. I arrived around noon, and my host, Bruno, from Rooms Hvar picked me up close to the ferry. The ferry stop is located right in the Old Town so it’s not directly accessible by car. We had to walk a few minutes up hill to the nearest road, and then it was a few minutes drive to the accommodation. Just keep this in mind when packing your bags that you will likely have to walk with them a few minutes, no matter where you are staying.

I was so excited when I arrived to my accommodation because my host had upgraded my room to one with a balcony and view. As a budget traveller in Hvar, it was such a treat to have a private space with such an incredible view. I took it all in and then got ready to get lunch and go to the beach!

Pokonji Dol Beach

Pokonji Dol Beach is one of the best on Hvar, only about a 20 minute walk from town (or 10 minutes if you’re staying at Rooms Hvar). On the way to the beach, I stopped for a quick takeaway lunch at a local spot my host recommended, called Juhu Hu. They serve burgers, salads, and pastas, at a great price with large portions. I’d highly recommend it for budget travelers looking for a filling meal.

The rocky beach

It’s a bit of a hike down to Pokonji Dol Beach, but it’s pretty easy and the views along the way are incredible. As you descend, the beach slowly comes into view, with the bright turquoise water framed by pine trees and rocky cliffs. Trust me, the hike is worth it!

I spent a few hours at Pokonji Dol Beach relaxing, eating my takeaway lunch, and taking a dip in the sea. The water was cold in May, but it was too beautiful not to at least put my feet in.

Dinner in the Old Town

That evening, I walked into Hvar Town to get dinner and explore as the sun was setting. I ate at Let’s TACO ‘bout Hvar, which had some very creative vegetarian tacos.

After dinner, I wandered through the old stone streets and stopped at Aroma Gelato. It’s supposedly the best gelato in Hvar and was even featured on Somebody Feed Phil, one of my favorite travel shows! I returned back to my room in time to watch the sunset from my balcony. It was the perfect first night on the island!

Day 2: Exploring Hvar Town

Fortica Fortress

After getting ready, I headed into the Old Town for coffee and a pastry at Oasis Coffee Shop, a cute café located along the main square. From there, I began the hike up to the Hvar Fortress (Fortica). Most of the walk is through town, with a few switchbacks as you are approaching the fortress. Take your time, and try to go early to avoid the midday heat.

The view walking up to the Fortress

The Fortress costs about €10 to enter, so if you’re not interested in walking through it, I would just recommend enjoying the viewpoint that is right outside the entrance. You’ll see the same incredible panoramic view of Hvar Town, the marina, and the Pakleni Islands in the distance.

I really enjoyed exploring the fortress and would recommend it for anyone wanting to be immersed in the history of Hvar, dating back to the 16th century when the fortress was built. There weren’t many informational plaques, but there was a pamphlet and map given out at the entrance that helped to guide me through the Fortress.

Panoramic View of Hvar Town

If you want to explore Hvar a bit deeper, there is another fortress called Fort Napoleon even farther uphill. It’s a steep 30 minute walk from the main Fortress, but offers even better panoramic views of the island. I decided to keep my energy and skip this hike, since I heard that the Fort usually isn’t open to visitors. But you can still walk around the perimeter of it.

Lunch by the Beach

After the fortress, I walked back down to town and I grabbed a veggie sandwich from Hello Sandwich & Salad Bar. On the way back to my accommodation, I stopped at Plaza Krizna Luka, a small but pretty beach only a few minutes from town. It’s perfect for a quick swim or picnic without straying far from town.

Evening Walking Tour

After resting for a bit, I headed back into town for an evening walking tour I booked through GuruWalk. It ended up being just me and the guide, which made it feel like a private tour! She shared so much history about Hvar and its Venetian influence. My favorite part was learning about all the things produced in Hvar, like lavender, olive oil, and, most importantly, Hvar lace, a very rare craft made from agave threads.

I stopped for a quick dinner and then headed back to my room to watch another amazing sunset from my balcony (I’m taking advantage of it while I have it!)

Day 3: Day Trip to the Pakleni Islands

The Pakleni Islands (sometimes called Paklinski Islands) are a group of about 20 small islands and islets just off the coast of Hvar. They’re known for their crystal-clear coves, beach clubs, and peaceful nature. You can visit several of them by water taxi or on an organized boat tour.

The most popular stops are Palmizana, known for its upscale beach clubs, and Jerolim, which is a nudist-friendly beach. But I decided to visit Mlini Beach, a smaller, quieter spot that’s perfect for swimming and relaxing.

Getting There

If you want to visit multiple islands in one day, a group tour is the way to go. This tour brings you to two caves, which you can’t reach by yourself, and to Palmizana beach.

Although the tours are great, they were a bit out of my budget, so I decided to take a taxi boat instead. They leave from the main harbor and cost about €10 round trip, making it a super budget-friendly option for solo travelers. The ride only took about 20 minutes.

Before hopping on the boat, I stopped for a quick coffee and breakfast in town, and picked up a snack at Mlinar.

A Relaxing Beach Day

Once I arrived to the island, I walked about 5 minutes to Mlini beach, just on the other side of a small peninsula. I planned to just sit on the rocky beach, but I unfortunately forgot my towel. So I rented a beach chair for €20, which felt a little painful as a budget traveler, but I decided to make the most of it.

Mlini Beach

The water was incredibly clear, and there was even a tiny island across from Mlini that you could walk to through the shallow water. Just make sure to bring water shoes – there are sharp rocks and sea urchins along the way!

I spent about five hours at the beach, reading, listening to music, and enjoying my picnic of a spinach-cheese pastry and Fanta. Around 3 PM, I took the taxi boat back to Hvar. Make sure you keep your ticket from the morning, as it includes your trip back.

Dinner in Town

That night for dinner, I went to Fig Café Bar, one of the most popular restaurants in town, for a veggie burger and a glass of local wine. Afterwards, I did some light shopping for Hvar souvenirs. I picked up a bottle of Croatian olive oil from Radojkovic Olive Oil Shop, which my tour guide told me was rated one of the best olive oils in the world. I also picked up some lavender, another product Hvar is famous for.

I headed back to my room early to start packing and to catch one more Hvar sunset.

Day 4: Departing Hvar

After three perfect days on the island, it was time to move on. I took the morning ferry to Dubrovnik. Make sure you get to the ferry port early! I got there just in time and had to wait in a long line to get on the ferry.
