Hvar has a reputation for being Croatia’s “bougie island,” full of beach clubs, yachts, and expensive seafood restaurants. And while it is definitely on the pricier side (especially compared to Zadar or Split), I promise that you can absolutely visit Hvar on a budget.

As a budget-conscious solo traveler, I’ll admit that when I first started looking for places to stay in Hvar, I was a little nervous about the prices. Most of the accommodations were above what I usually like to spend, and I assumed the restaurants and activities would be just as expensive.

But thankfully, I ended up finding an amazing budget-friendly place to stay that I’m so excited to share. Once I arrived on the island, I made it my mission to scope out Old Town Hvar for the best affordable restaurants and cafés. I found a few places where you can eat well without spending a fortune. And I found that most of the island activities are free or very cheap.

How to Visit Hvar on a Budget

I actually loved Hvar so much (and found it budget friendly enough) that I ended up extending my stay by one night. Read all about my 3 days in Hvar here!

Whether you’re backpacking Croatia, traveling solo, or simply trying to save money while still enjoying the best parts of the island, here’s exactly how to visit Hvar on a budget.

Traveling to Hvar in Shoulder Season

Most budget travelers know that traveling in shoulder season (the months before and after peak season) is the best way to save money without compromising. This is especially true in Hvar and the rest of Croatia, which has become increasingly popular and costly over the past few years.

For Croatia, shoulder season usually means May–early June and September–October, when the weather is still warm and sunny, but accommodation prices are significantly less than July and August. I visited Hvar in late May, and it was genuinely the perfect time. It was warm enough for the beach, but without the sky high prices and huge summer crowds. Popular spots like the main square, the beaches, and the fortress were never overly crowded.

Best Budget Places to Stay in Hvar

Hvar Town is definitely pricier than other small town on the island, but there are still fantastic budget-friendly options – from peaceful private rooms to highly-rated hostels that are perfect for meeting other travelers.

Rooms Hvar (Best for introverted solo travelers on a budget)

This is where I stayed and I can’t recommend it enough, especially if you’re a solo traveler who prefers a peaceful stay over a party hostel. Rooms Hvar is located about a 10-minute walk from the Old Town, close to Pokonji Dol Beach. It’s quiet at night, walkable to all the sites, and incredibly affordable for Hvar (I paid around €30 per night, but the price will vary depending on the month).

They offer private rooms with shared bathrooms, but the property is small and quiet, so I barely saw anyone else and usually had the bathroom to myself. My host, Bruno, was so kind. He even picked me up from the ferry terminal and upgraded me to a room with a balcony overlooking the sea.

So if you want comfort, privacy, and a relaxing place to come back to after a day of exploring, Rooms Hvar is the perfect spot.

Dink’s Place Hostel (Best social hostel)

Dink’s Place is one of the top-rated hostels in Hvar, known for its social atmosphere, organized events and friendly staff. They organize pub nights, family dinners, and excursions, making it easy to connect with people while exploring the island. It’s about a 5 minute walk outside the old town in a safe, quiet neighborhood.

Helvetia Hostel (Best quiet hostel)

Helvetia Hostel has a great location in Hvar Town, only a few steps from the main square and ferry port. It’s small, homey, and has a more quiet, relaxed vibe than the party hostels. It also has a beautiful rooftop terrace that’s great for lounging or remote work. It’s a great choice if you want to be right in the center of everything without paying hotel prices.

The White Rabbit Hostel (Best location)

The White Rabbit‘s location in Hvar could not be better, being right along the main square. It’a bright, modern hostel with cozy common areas, a nice kitchen, and clean dorms. It’s another social hostel that offers daily activities, so you’ll never run out of things to do as a solo traveler.

Best Budget Places to Eat in Hvar

I’m vegetarian, so all of these places are vegetarian-friendly, and most have vegan options too. Eating out in Hvar can get expensive, but these spots offer great food at affordable prices. None of them are fancy restaurants – if that’s what you’re looking for you will have to splurge.

Hello Sandwich & Salad Bar

A sandwich shop with outdoor seating right in Hvar’s main square. Sandwiches and salads are around €10-15 each, and the portions are filling. Great for a quick lunch before heading to the beach.

Pizza Feta

A casual pizza spot with individual slices for about €4 each. The slices are pretty big and perfect for a light lunch or dinner.

Mlinar

You’ll find Mlinar bakeries all over Croatia. They have everything from croissants to sandwiches to traditional Croatian bureks. Their pastries are cheap, filling, and perfect to take on the go. I would usually grab one each day for breakfast or a midday snack.

Kebab Factory

A takeaway sandwich shop with surprisingly good vegan options like seitan and smoked tofu. Sandwiches cost around €10-12 depending on the protein you choose, and they’re very filling.

Let’s TACO ‘bout Hvar

If you’re craving something different in Hvar, definitely try this taco place. Not exactly traditional Mexican tacos, but they’re delicious and flavorful. You’ll get 3 filling tacos for €10-15. They have two great vegetarian options, one with black beans and one with chickpeas (iykyk, it’s hard to find beans anywhere in Europe).

Juhu Hu (Fast Food)

This spot is about a 10-minute walk from the Old Town, but it’s on the way to Pokonji Dol Beach and close to many budget accommodations. My host recommended it, and I ended up getting a giant bowl of veggie pasta for €14 that lasted me two meals! Everything is takeaway, making it super convenient for bring to the beach.

Studenac Market (Supermarket)

All budget travelers know this ultimate hack: grab breakfast or snacks from the supermarket. There are several Studenac Markets around Hvar Town where you can pick up fruit, yogurt, bread, and cold cuts to make your own sandwiches. Perfect for a cheap beach picnic.

Free & Cheap Things to Do in Hvar

Hvar may be known for its upscale beach clubs and yacht parties, but there are so many free or nearly free things to do, especially if you love beaches, nature, and history.

Relax on Hvar’s Free Beaches

Beaches in Hvar are free to enjoy. You only pay if you rent a sunbed or go to a beach club. The water is unbelievably clear and there are many beaches within walking distance from town.

Here are a few of the best beaches within walking distance of Hvar Town. Just bring your own towel, snacks, and water to avoid beach club prices.

  • Pokonji Dol Beach – turquoise water and amazing views (~20 minute walk from town)
  • Plaza Krizna Luka – small, calm, and super close to town
  • Bonj Beach – popular and beautiful, but go early to avoid having to pay for a chair

Join a Free Walking Tour

I always book free walking tours on GuruWalk when I’m in a new city. I did one in Hvar and was the only person on the tour, so it felt like a private experience. Walking tours are great for learning about the island’s history, hidden corners, and traditions. Since the tour is free, you should give a small tip to your guide. Anything between €5-20 is acceptable.

Walk Up to the Fortica Viewpoint

Hiking to the Hvar Fortress is one of the best free activities on the island. Although it costs €10 to enter the fortress, the viewpoint outside the entrance is just as incredible. It overlooks the Old Town, marina, and Pakleni Islands, and is even better at sunset. So if you’re not interest in diving into the history of Hvar and want to save €10, just enjoy the free viewpoint.

Visit the Pakleni Islands on a €10 Boat Taxi

Most people book expensive island-hopping tours to the Pakleni Island which can cost €50–€150. But, you can easily visit the Pakleni Islands for just €10 roundtrip using the taxi boats at the harbor. The boats run regularly throughout the day. Just walk up to the sign and ask which beaches they’ll take you to and when the next one’s leaving. You shouldn’t have to wait long as they usually just wait for the boat to fill up, which can take around 20 minutes.

Three of the most popular spots to visit on the Pakleni Islands are:

  • Mlini Beach – quiet, relaxing, and perfect for swimming
  • Jerolim – naturist beach with gorgeous coves
  • Palmizana – upscale, party vibes with the famous Carpe Diem Beach Club, but still beautiful

Make sure to bring your own snacks and water, as there’s only a few restaurants in the Pakleni Islands and they’re overpriced. Water shoes are also a must for walking in the water, and a towel for lounging on the beach.

Visit St. Stephen’s Square and Cathedral

St. Stephen’s Square (Trg sv. Stjepana) is the heart of Hvar Town and one of the most beautiful squares in all of Croatia. It’s the oldest and largest piazza in the Dalmatia region, lined with historic stone buildings, cafés, and shops. It’s great for grabbing a morning coffee and people-watching in the sun.

At the far end of the square sits St. Stephen’s Cathedral, a beautiful 16th-century church and bell tower rising above the square. For just €2, you can step inside to see its ornate altars, stone columns, and carved details up close. It’s one of the cheapest things to do in Hvar, and a quick activity if you’re exploring the Old Town on foot.

  2. Love this! Hvar is such a beautiful island, and it’s great to see a guide that proves you don’t need a luxury budget to enjoy it. Your tips for affordable stays and cheap eats are super helpful, and visiting in shoulder season is such a smart move. Definitely saving this for my next Croatia trip!

  3. I love that you included pricing! Hvar is an area I wouldn’t think to travel to simply for its reputation of being too expensive (for me anyway). The places you found in combination of the free things to do would definitely make this an affordable visit still.
    Thanks for making me reconsider!
